ABILENE, Texas — Tarleton State scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth, putting seven consecutive hitters on base after the leadoff man was retired, and the Texans went on to an 8-2 win over Eastern New Mexico University on Saturday in the ACU Classic four-team round-robin, hosted by Abilene Christian.

Leading 3-2, Tarleton catcher Jonathan Schmitz hit a one-out double off ENMU left-hander Daniel Sterling (1-2) in the sixth. Ty Crump followed with an RBI triple and Chris Patton walked, chasing Sterling.

Patton moved to second on a wild pitch and Evan Robinson walked, loading the bases, before Noah Ringenberger hit a two-run single to left. Robinson scored on the play on a wild relay by Greyhounds third baseman Daniel Binz.

Robinson scored on a single by second baseman Ryan Small.

Matt Buckmaster (2-1) worked seven strong innings for the Texans (7-5), allowing seven hits with three walks and five strikeouts.

ENMU (7-6) took a quick lead in the first on a leadoff single by Luis Quinones, a bunt single by Brooke Brooks and a two-out RBI single by Mitch Wolfe after first baseman Joe Huwer grounded into a 6-4-3 double play.

Tarleton scored single runs in the second, third and fourth before the Hounds closed to 3-2 in the top of the fifth on a leadoff double by Alex Schultz, Blake Thomsen’s sacrifice and a squeeze bunt single by Brooks, who finished the day 4-for-5.

Both teams finished the game with 10 hits, but the Hounds stranded 10 runners and hit into a pair of double plays.
