Hounds fall to Cameron in tourney

ABILENE, Texas — Six Cameron players collected at least two hits and the Aggies outslugged Eastern New Mexico University 15-9 on Sunday to wrap up the ACU Classic baseball round-robin, hosted by Abilene Christian.

Right fielder Brad Blumer went 4-for-5 and scored three times for Cameron (12-6), which pounded out 20 hits, while designated hitter Andrew Garcia drove in four runs with a 4-for-6 outing. The Aggies took a 6-1 lead with a five-run second inning, but didn’t pull away until scored three runs in the eighth and three more in the ninth.

Senior shortstop Alex Schultz went 2-for-4 and hit a three-run homer, his first of the season, to cap the Greyhounds’ four-run third which tied the game 6-6. Left fielder Luis Quinones and first baseman Joe Huwer were each 4-for-5 for ENMU (7-7), which had 15 hits.

The Aggies committed four errors and the Hounds chased Cameron starter Jordan Watson in the fourth, but CU helped its cause by turning three double plays. James Rhodes (2-1), the second of four Aggies hurlers, earned the win with four innings of relief work, permitting two runs on six hits.

Starter Andrew Martin (2-2) gave up nine hits and eight runs — four earned — in four innings for ENMU.

The Hounds, who finished 1-2 in the round-robin, return to action with a 2 p.m. single game today against Wayland Baptist at Greyhound Field.
