BOYS

Portales (14-12) at Lovington (12-14)

  • When: 7 p.m. today in the District 4-3A tournament final
  • Radio: KSEL-FM 105.9.
  • Last meeting: Portales beat the Wildcats 59-53 at Lovington on Feb. 18.
  • Last time out: The Rams won at Ruidoso 65-50 on Thursday to advance to tonight’s game. The Wildcats downed Ruidoso 57-50 at Roswell on Monday in a playoff for the district tournament’s top seed.
  • Of note: After averaging just 42 points in splitting two regular-season district meetings against Ruidoso, the Rams surpassed that total well before the end of the third quarter on Thursday. PHS outscored the Warriors 14-5 in the second quarter to take control of the game. … Lovington is ranked seventh and Portales ninth in 3A. … This will be only the seventh home game of the season for the Wildcats (3-3). Meantime, the Rams have gone 6-4 in true road games. … Against eight common opponents, the Rams are 6-5 while the Wildcats stand 6-7.

 

GIRLS

Hobbs (23-5) at Clovis (26-0)

  • When: 7 p.m. today at The Rock in the District 4-5A tournament championship
  • Radio: KCLV-FM 99.1
  • Last time out: The Lady Wildcats, ranked No. 1 in Class 5A and the defending state champions, beat third-ranked Hobbs 54-34 at The Rock on Feb. 21 to complete a perfect regular season. Hobbs on Thursday advanced to tonight’s final with a 41-26 win at home over Carlsbad.
  • This season: The Lady Cats, ranked No. 1 in Class 5A, have three wins over the Lady Eagles. Each of the first two was by single figures, though, including a 39-33 win at Hobbs on Feb. 6 in which they rallied from a 24-12 halftime deficit.
  • Of note: The Lady Eagles are the only team to beat Clovis over the last two seasons, although the Lady Cats own a 6-2 record against them over that time. They are 50-0 against everyone else they’ve played. … After trailing Carlsbad 8-7 at the quarter on Thursday night, Hobbs dominated the middle two stanzas, outscoring the Cavegirls 25-10. Senior F Daniel Patterson led the Lady Eagles with 14 points, while senior P Halle Woods scored 10.

Portales (21-4) at Lovington (21-4)

  • When: 5:30 p.m. today
  • Radio: KSEL-FM 105.9.
  • Last meeting: The Lady Wildcats, two-time defending 3A state champions, completed a regular-season District 4-3A sweep with a 45-41 win over PHS on Feb. 18 at Lovington.
  • Last time out: The Lady Rams routed Ruidoso 65-28 at home in Tuesday’s tournament seminal game. The Lady Wildcats haven’t played since their last meeting with PHS.
  • Of note: The game quite possibly could be for a No. 1 seed in the Class 3A state tournament. … Portales is 1-2 against the Lady Wildcats, having beaten them 48-42 on Dec. 7 in a tournament at Denver City. … Lovington has won the last two 3A titles despite being seeded 12th in 2012 and ninth last year. … Senior G Jocelyn Jeffery averages 22.2 ppg for the season for Lovington. She was 16-of-16 from the free throw line and scored 25 points in a win at PHS on Feb. 11, but was held to four points in the rematch. Senior F Salena Ornelas picked up some of the slack in that game with 14 points. … The Lady Wildcats are 6-2 on their home court this season. Meantime, the Lady Rams are 9-2 on the road. … The only other losses for both teams this season have been to Class 5A No. 1 Clovis (Portales once, Lovington twice) and 5A No. 4 Mayfield (each team once).
