STEPHENVILLE, Texas — Right fielder Rustin Thomas capped a five-run second with a two-run homer and Tarleton State went on to a 10-4 victory over Eastern New Mexico University in the first game of the teams’ Lone Star Conference-opening doubleheader on Friday.

Tarleton held on for a 4-3 win in the nine-inning nightcap. The teams were slated to play one game on Friday, but because of the possibility of bad weather the Sunday series finale was moved up two days.

The teams will now wrap up the four-game series with a noon (MST) twin bill today.

Tarleton (11-3) erased a 1-0 deficit with its early rally in the opener, which went seven innings. The Texans outhit the Greyhounds 9-4, getting a three hits and four RBIs from designated hitter Andrew Jacobi, including a two-run homer in the fourth.

ENMU (10-4) got a solo homer from junior right fielder Blake Cooper in the fourth, and two RBIs from senior third baseman Sam Hedrick. Senior right-hander Ben Monticello (3-1), who came into the game with an earned run average of less than 1.00, took the loss, giving up nine hits and 10 earned runs in five innings.

In the second game, right-hander Colton Burleson (2-2) allowed five hits and one run in seven innings and the Texans opened a 4-0 lead with a three-run fourth off ENMU junior left-hander Rusty Edwards.

Shortstop Brett Ackerman singled home a run for ENMU in the fifth. In the eighth, Hedrick hit a sacrifice fly off reliever Troyal Yosko before Cooper greeted Ethan Lenz with his second homer of the day and fourth of the season to pull ENMU to 4-3.

Lenz, though, retired four consecutive hitters after that to earn his fifth save of the season.

Both teams collected seven hits, with designated hitter Mark Foley and left fielder Ryan Forkel both going 2-for-3 for ENMU.

Junior center fielder Matthew Burks had a double in the opener and a single in the second game to extend his hitting streak to 14 games.
