LAWTON, Okla. — Junior left-hander Vanessa Ramirez tossed a four-hitter and shortstop Audrey Velasquez, third baseman Lizzy Velasquez and left fielder Kyra Sirag drove in two runs each as Eastern New Mexico University’s softball team pounded Cameron 9-1 in the opener of the team’s Lone Star Conference-opening twin bill on Friday.

The Aggies returned the favor in the nightcap, blasting the Zias 9-1, with both games shortened to five innings by the eight-run rule. The rubber match of the series is set for 11 a.m. (MST) today.

Audrey Velasquez hit an RBI double and scored on her sister’s two-run homer in the top of the first for the Zias. ENMU (7-11) made it 6-1 with a three-run third highlighted by Sirag’s two-run double and cruised from there.

Lizzy Velasquez led the team’s 11-hit attack, going 3-for-3 and scoring three times, in handing Cameron’s Samantha Betts (5-1) her first loss. The only run for Cameron (12-5) came on an RBI single by shortstop Carly Allerheiligen in the second innings.

The Aggies jumped on freshman Cailin Garmon (3-7) for six runs in the first two innings of the nightcap. Ramirez took over and held Cameron in check until the fifth, when the Aggies got an RBI single from catcher Makenzie Burk and a game-ending, two-run single from second baseman Macy McKay.

McKay and left fielder Tara Martini, who hit a solo homer in the first, each drove in three runs for Cameron to back Kelsey Watson (5-3), who allowed three hits and an unearned run over five innings.

Lizzy Velasquez drove in the Zias’ only run with a fourth-inning sacrifice fly.
