Taekwon-Do Students Qualify to Compete in Rome, Italy

Black belts from Eastern New Mexico Taekwon-Do were in Houston two weekends ago qualifying for the International Taekwon-Do World Championships. This is the sport’s equivalent of the Olympics.

To qualify, a black belt must compete against black belts from across the United States to earn one of three slots in his or her event. The five will be part of the 130-member USA team who will travel to Rome this summer to compete against black belts from across the world.

The following qualified from Master Blakeley’s school, which operates in Portales and has Clovis and Roswell branches:

• Audra Brown, 4th Degree, of Portales, qualified in breaking and sparring

• Maeve Brown, 2nd Degree, of Portales, specialty breaking,

• Haley Madden,1st Degree, of Portales, sparring and patterns
