Hounds blank USW

Staff report
HOBBS — Freshman James Gutierrez made four saves and Eastern New Mexico University earned its first shutout win of the season on Tuesday, defeating University of the Southwest 2-0.

The Hounds (3-5-1) have never gone nine matches into a season to collect a shutout.

Redshirt freshman Daniel Sanchez scored on a free kick from just outside the box, his first collegiate goal, early in the match and assisted on a goal midway through the second half by senior midfielder Abayneh Crosby.

It was Crosby’s third goal of the season and 11th of his career, tying him for 10th with Edgar Bear (2007-10) on the all-time goals list at ENMU and moving him into 10th place in career points with 29.

ENMU returns to action at 3 p.m. (MDT) on Thursday at Lubbock Christian.
