Lady Cats remain winless in district

Staff report
HOBBS — The bad news? The Clovis High girls soccer team is still looking for its first district win in three-plus seasons under coach Traci Sievers.

The good news is it was the District 4-6A opener — a competitive 2-0 loss Tuesday at Hobbs — and the Lady Wildcats still have five district contests remaining.

Ariel Lopez broke a scoreless tie when she coaxed a shot inside the right post from six yards out midway through the second half, and Hobbs (10-3-1) added another goal three minutes later to secure the win.

Hobbs held a 7-2 advantage in shots on goal, which Sievers said was a little deceiving.

“The bright spot we can take out of this is we can compete away from our home turf with one of the leaders in the state and our district,” Sievers said. “Except for a five-minute span in the second half, it was pretty much an even match.”

Shelby Jones made two saves in her first start in goal for Clovis (9-3-1) in nearly a month.
