Police chief: No suspects in vandalism spree

Staff report

The Monday evening vandalism of 32 cars throughout Clovis is a stone-cold whodunit.

Clovis Police Chief Steve Sanders said the department has no suspects and no leads on what appears to be the random smashing of vehicle windows. No particular type of vehicle was hit, and no particular area of the city saw a concentration of the damage.

“We really need the community’s help on this,” Sanders said. “We have 32 cars, and we figure each windshield is $500 a pop. That’s a good chunk of change.

“Somebody knows something about this, and I hope they’d share it with us.”

In nearly all of the cases, the back windshield of the vehicle was broken with a blunt object, and there is no indication anything was stolen from the vehicles.

“It’s almost like they were playing tag with a baseball bat,” Sanders said.
