Grube earns provisional D-II qualifying mark

Staff report
PORTALES — Eastern New Mexico University junior Laura Grube earned a provisional qualification for NCAA Division II national track meet last week with a throw of 121 feet, 9 inches in women’s javelin in the Bobcat Relays, hosted by Division I Texas State at San Marcos, Texas.

“Provisional” means she’s on a list which could earn her a berth in the national meet, scheduled for May 21-23 at Allendale, Michigan, if not enough athletes meet the actual qualifying standard.

Grube, from Crowe, Oregon, finished fourth in the event. Her throw ranks first in the Lone Star Conference so far this season, and she also has the No. 5 throw in hammer and the 10th-best throw in discus.

Meantime, senior Beth Blind of Kennedale, Texas, had ENMU’s highest finish in the meet, placing second in the 5,000 at 17:22.99.

For the men, Texico freshman Adrian Gomez was ninth in the 400 hurdles, but set a school record for the event with a time of 54.60 seconds. Teammate Ilia Eligulachvili, of Israel, followed in 10th place at 55.08.

Gomez ranks fifth and Eligulachvili seventh among LSC competitors in the event so far this spring.

Senior Tanaka Pfupajena of Zimbabwe placed third for the Greyhounds in men’s javelin at 171-0, ranking him fifth this season in the LSC.

ENMU squads return to action on Friday and Saturday in the Texas Tech Open at Lubbock.
