WT notches series sweep against ENMU

Staff report
CANYON, Texas — The struggling Eastern New Mexico University baseball team held West Texas A&M in relative check on Saturday, but the Greyhounds couldn’t get much going with the bats and dropped 5-3 and 3-0 Lone Star Conference decisions to the Buffaloes as WT completed a three-game sweep.

In Friday’s series opener, WT jumped out to a big early lead and thumped the Hounds 15-5. The Buffs (32-15, 20-12 LSC) are third in the LSC, two games behind co-leaders Texas A&M-Kingsville (31-13, 21-9) and Angelo State (28-17, 21-9) heading into next weekend’s final regular-season games.

Austin Moore (8-2) pitched into the seventh inning of the seven-inning opener before Kyle Tinius got the final two outs for the first of his two saves on the day.

Left fielder Nick Chapman hit a one-out homer, his third, in the bottom of the first off ENMU’s Keenan Dodd (0-3) and WT built a 5-1 lead heading onto the seventh.

The Hounds (10-37, 3-29) scored on an RBI double by freshman Chris Padilla, then Tregra Williams hit an RBI single with two outs off Tinius before he got Daniel Ward on a grounder to third to end it.

First baseman Christian Loya went 3-for-3 to lead the Buffs’ nine-hit attack.Catcher Troy LaBrie hit a two-run single off reliever Daniel Schiller in the sixth to stretch WT’s lead to 5-1.

Padilla had two of ENMU’s seven hits, scoring one run and driving in another.

In the nine-inning second game,ENMU left-hander Chris Miranda-Carr (0-3), who pitched briefly in relief on Friday night, blanked the Buffs until two out in the fourth when designated hitter Hunter Henderson hit an RBI single through the left side.

The Buffs chased Miranda-Carr in the sixth, scoring twice on a run-scoring single by center fielder Josh Day and a sacrifice fly to left field by catcher John Baiada.

WT right-hander Brooks Trujillo (7-4), who also saw some bullpen duty in Friday’s tilt, pitched shutout ball through seven innings to get the win, walking one and striking out five. ENMU had a pair of two-out hits in the top of the first before Trujillo nine in a row.

He then ran into trouble on a two-out single by  Justin Paul and an error in the fourth, but Paul was thrown out by Baiada trying to steal third.

ENMU loaded the bases in the seventh with two out on two singles and a walk, but Trujillo escaped by getting pinch-hitter Wesley Jordan on strikes. Thomas Garland and Tinius each went an inning to finish it.

The Hounds wrap up their season next weekend with a three-game LSC series against Cameron at Greyhound Field, starting with a 5 p.m. single game on Friday.

WT 15, ENMU 5 (Friday) — The Buffs pounded ENMU freshman left-hander Alec Lemmon (2-5) for seven first-inning runs, although only three were earned because of an error. They added four more in the second for an 11-0 lead.

Right fielder Mason Shiflett, left fielder Nick Chapman and shortstop Jake Fuller each had three hits for WT, which collected 18 in a game shortened to 6 1/2 innings by the 10-run rule.
