Staff report

One of western music’s longest-running groups is making its way to Clovis Thursday night.

The Sons of the Pioneers, with more than 82 years of entertaining under their belts, are coming to the Marshall Middle School Auditorium for a 7 p.m. show.

Admission is $20 for the general public and $15 for seniors, military and students. The show is also one of the series’ Family Friendly shows, with $45 five-ticket blocks available. Tickets are available at the door, the CCC cashier’s window or online at clovisarts.com.

The group got its start in 1934, with original members Roy Rogers (known then as Leonard Sly), Tim Spencer and Bob Nolan creating original compositions about the West.

The group was inducted into the Country Music Association’s Hall of Fame in Nashville, Tennessee, in 1980; the Texas Western Swing Hall of Fame in 1988; the Western Music Association Hall of Fame in 1989 and the National Cowboy Hall of Fame’s Hall of Great Western Performers in 2005.

The Sons also have a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame from 1976 and have two songs inducted in the Grammy Hall of Fame — “Cool Water” in 1986 and “Tumbling Tumbleweed” in 2002.

The current group includes lead vocalist Ken Lattimore, Tommy Nallie on lead guitar, Randy Rudd on rhythm guitar, Mark Abbott on bass and Justin Branum on the fiddle.

The group advertises more than 170 performances this year, with Clovis starting off a three-city New Mexico tour that goes to Las Cruces Friday and Hobbs Saturday before a four-night stop in Branson, Missouri.
