One more day, one more conversation, one more outburst of laughter and even one more time just to argue with you. These are a few things I and many others wish we could have with Catherine Bugg. I’d like one more chance to speak up and let her know just how much she and her […]

I occasionally, when preparing for class, find myself discovering things that I wish I had not found. I suppose that this is true for other educators, as well. Like the words from Don Henley’s song, “Dirty Laundry,” it’s a matter of “You don’t really want to know what’s goin’ on; you don’t really want to […]

Wind should not ruin holiday
Curtis K. Shelburne I wish the wind would let up. I don’t like it. I can deal fairly well with hot or cold, rain or shine, and just about as many varieties of weather as you care to mention. (Okay, I admit that I don’t care for swamp weather: 90-plus degrees and 90-plus humidity. Given […]

Opportunity wasted for unusual

Singing the right tune for the new year
By Curtis K. Shelburne: Local columnist Although I certainly wish for you and yours a happy and blessed New Year, I confess that I’m rarely terribly excited about New Year’s fanfare. (I like almost any reason for some days off and time with friends and good food, so I’m not a total New Year’s grinch […]
State workers ordinary people, too
By Clyde Davis: Local columnist The holidays are, most definitely, a time when we take stock of and count our blessings. They are also a time when we figure out how we shall allocate limited resources to cover the ways we wish to express our love, be it gifts, parties, or travel expenses to share […]
